This notice covers refract.fyi, operated under The Refract Co. brand. It does not replace privacy information for individual Refract products.

What this website collects

This website does not provide accounts or contact forms. If you have not allowed analytics, we do not load Google Analytics, set Google Analytics cookies, or send analytics events to Google.

After you choose, your browser stores that choice locally so we can remember it. This preference is necessary to respect your choice; it is not used to identify you or measure your visit.

Optional website analytics

If you select Allow analytics, we use Google Analytics 4 to understand visits in aggregate. It may set first-party cookies such as _ga and _ga_<id> to distinguish browsers and sessions.

We collect page views, general browser and device information, approximate location, referral or campaign information, and a small set of deliberate interactions: Paper Store and product links, contact action types, social links, and carousel controls. We do not send email addresses, message contents, document contents, or other information you type into Google Analytics.

Advertising storage and advertising personalization stay disabled, and our code disables Google Signals. We use analytics only to improve this website and understand interest in our work—not for ads, user profiles, or data sales. Google explains its handling in Google’s privacy policy and Analytics data safeguards.

Your analytics choice

Our legal basis for optional analytics is your consent. Choosing No thanks has no effect on the site. You can change your choice at any time with Analytics choices in the footer. Turning analytics off refreshes the current page without Google, stops new analytics events, and removes the Google Analytics cookies that this site can access. Information already received is handled under the retention rules below.

Google Analytics cookies can otherwise last for up to two years. We use Google Analytics’ two-month user and event data-retention setting; Google notes that this setting does not remove standard aggregated reports on the same schedule. Your local consent choice remains until you change it or clear this site’s browser storage.

When you email us

If you email us, we receive the information you choose to send, such as your email address, message, and attachments. We use it to reply, provide support, or handle your request, and keep it only for as long as reasonably needed.

Hosting and external links

This website is hosted on GitHub Pages. GitHub may process technical information needed to operate its hosting service. External websites have their own privacy policies.

Your rights and changes

You may ask to access, correct, delete, restrict, or receive personal information connected to this website, and you may object where that right applies. You may withdraw consent at any time without affecting earlier lawful processing. Use the privacy inbox to make a request. You may also complain to your local data protection authority. We will update this page if the way refract.fyi handles information changes.

Product policy

Paper & Refract

Last updated
29 April 2025

At The Refract Co., we care about your privacy. This policy explains what we collect, why, and how it is handled—in plain English, with no legalese.

Accounts and sync

Right now, all your data in Paper—your library, settings, and other app data—stays entirely on your device. In a future version, we plan to introduce optional cloud syncing using Firebase, so you can access your books and settings across devices.

When this update happens, you will get a clear notification in the app. We will not move anything to the cloud unless you agree.

We will use Firebase Auth to help you log in and Firebase Firestore/Storage to sync your content securely. Read more in Google’s privacy policy.

Optional analytics

Analytics are entirely optional and can be disabled at any time. We use PostHog to understand how people use the app—for example, which features are popular or which screens are used most often. This helps us improve the experience.

We only collect anonymous, non-identifiable information. We do not collect file names, file contents, or personal data. We do not know what you read, and we will not try to find out. Read more about PostHog’s privacy approach.

Crash reporting

To fix bugs quickly, we use Sentry to log crash reports and app errors. These reports may include technical details about what caused the crash, but do not contain your personal files or identity. Read Sentry’s privacy policy.

Platform data collection

If you are on Windows, Microsoft might collect crash reports separately through Windows Error Reporting, which is built into Windows. You can turn it off in your Windows privacy settings.

Your control

You can use Paper completely offline. No account or analytics are required.

When we introduce new features such as cloud sync or login, they will be optional and explained clearly before you choose to use them.

We do not sell your data. We do not track you. We only collect what we need to improve Paper, and we always want you to know what is going on.

Your rights

We follow the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) even if you are not in the EU. We believe privacy is a right everywhere. This means:

  • We only collect data when it is necessary and explained.
  • You can ask to see, delete, or correct your data.
  • We do not use your data for ads or sell it to anyone.
